Is your Facebook fan page secure? October 1st Requirements.
![]() The Facebook Development team has been releasing updates recently, and it’s been hard for most Facebook users to keep up. The upcoming security update is actually a good move by Facebook, but Facebook Fan Page owners will need to check a few things to make sure their users can still view their content. As of October 1st, if you have any external content on your Facebook Fan Page, you will be required to obtain a Secure Socket Layers (SSL) Certificate in order for your users browsing on a secure connection (https://) to be able to see your content.
What is a SSL Certificate? Secure Socket Layers is a way to encrypt and protect user’s information sent to and from websites. If your website currently accepts credit cards as a form of payment, you probably already have a SSL Certificate. If not, it’s not a huge ordeal to buy SSL and add it to your site. How to make sure your Fan Page and Website is secure Yes, this is yet another hoop that Fan Page owners have to jump through, but this shows a great concern on Facebook’s part to protect the information of their users and ultimately is a move worth doing. So, what can you do to ensure the privacy of your fans? Luckily this involves little more than just a few extra dollars a month, and the slight nuisance of jumping through the hoops. To secure your site, you’ll need to do the following 3 things:
I’m sure this seems quite scary, but with a quick call to your webhost’s customer service team, they should be able to walk you through the process (if not take care of it for you)! If you are unsure if you have a good web host, here are a few resources that can secure your website properly.
Now that you’ve secured your website, you are almost finished complying to Facebook’s upcoming update. The last step is making sure Facebook knows your secure URL’s. To do this, go to the Facebook Developer App, and edit your application’s settings. Once in the settings, you will need to add your secure website link to the “Secure Canvas URL” and “Secure Page Tab URL” boxes. Once you have completed this step, your fan pages are now secured, and the only effects you will see from Facebook’s upcoming update will be the increased security of your user’s private information.
